Name: Kiran Michelle Shasthri
Alias: K, Kiran, Yin-yang, K-shelle
Age: Sixteen
Birthday: August 31
Race: Meta-human of Indian descent
Grade: Eleventh
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Straight
Appearance: Kiran is medium height and average build for a teenager. Her skin is very dark brown and her almost black hair reaches slightly past her shoulders and is kept braided back. Her eyes are wide and dark brown.
Whenever it's practical, she wears a traditional Indian sari, usually her blue and purple one. It is usually wrapped around her like a dress during the summer or a shawl during the winter, especially since she is apt to get cold easily. During the spring and fall, she wears her sari over a long-sleeved blue top and pants. However, a lot of the time, Kiran just wants to fit in with her friends, so she’ll wear jeans and a t-shirt or sweatshirt. She tends not to wear skirts or dresses very often, claiming that they inhibit her ability to move freely. In the summer, she usually wears sandals, but when the weather drops below 80, she will put her tennis shoes on immediately.
Kiran has had her ears pierced since she was a small girl and almost always wears stud earrings, usually with her birthstone, the peridot, in them. She also has an ankle ring, which she almost never takes off. An avid music lover and band geek, Kiran is rarely seen far from her silver flute or without her flute case somewhere nearby.

Personality: Kiran’s a good student and spends quite a bit of time studying for classes or practicing her flute for band. She’s usually brave, has a good sense and love for adventure and stands up to her friends. She tends to have strong moral convictions and hates going against what she believes. For the most part, she’s easy-going and willing to spend time hanging out with her friends and doing whatever they’re doing. Kiran tends to talk very quickly, especially when she’s excited or when she knows a lot about the subject.
Kiran can be emotional and she believes that people can fall in love and live happily ever after. She tries not to let her emotions rule her actions, but sometimes it is difficult. One thing she’s very emotional about is anything on the subject of diseases because one of her best friends growing up died from cholera. She hates not being able to do anything to help her friends while they are in trouble. Kiran also tends to be impulsive sometimes. Without a strategy meeting beforehand, she would rush into a situation without necessarily thinking of how to get out first.
Amongst her close friends and the members of her squad, she comes across as a know-it-all (at times) with a wry sense of humor. She once told her best friend that if they left the school in the middle of the night without permission, she would become the next anatomy specimen, meaning she’d be killed and turned into a corpse for dissection. Around her classmates, she isn’t afraid to let other people know what she thinks and can be rather blunt.
Greatest Fear: Oddly enough, Kiran is afraid of the dark.
Most Important Secret: How sensitive she gets when other people talk about disease or Third World countries. She tries to hide this from other people.
Character Background: Until she was twelve, Kiran grew up in a small village in northern India with her parents and older brother, Ekram. Her father, a medical missionary originally from the US, married her mother, an Indian secretary at one of the health clinics.
Kiran enjoyed a happy childhood, spent primarily playing with her older brother and some of the other children in their village. She contracted every common childhood illness possible, but healed slightly quicker than most other kids due to her father’s medical knowledge. She attended school in the village until she was twelve.
When she was twelve, her father's missionary work was over in India, so their family moved back to New York, where her father grew up. She and Ekram, who was two years older, were reluctant to leave the only home they knew, but it was necessary. Their family moved to an apartment in New York and her mother started a job in the healthcare system. Kiran and Ekram began school in the New York public school system.
When Kiran was fourteen, strange things started happening. One day, when she was taking a math exam, the lights in the exam room suddenly went out. All of the other students freaked, but Kiran shot out a beam of light from her left hand. Mrs. Patterson, her teacher, was furious and marched her to the principal. Mr. Rivers, the school principal, smiled. A fellow meta-human with elemental control over fire, he immediately recognized Kiran’s potential and became a mentor for her. He was the one who suggested Kiran apply for admission at Kosaka Academy when she was sixteen.
She was accepted to Kosaka with junior status, even though she is young for her grade.
Powers: Elemental Manipulation: Two Elements
Light: She has elemental control over light and can bend light rays to achieve the illusion of invisibility, shine bright lights in the face of her opponent or illuminate a dimly lit corridor. Her skills with the illusions are still very far from good. This power usually takes the form of a beam of light radiating from her left hand and occasionally a sphere floating above her hands.
Dark: She also has limited elemental control over darkness, allowing her to extinguish light from places. However, this power is much weaker. This usually takes the form of darkness radiating from her right hand.
She has the potential to become an illusionist if she so desires by learning how to bend light rays in a certain formation.
Skills: In addition to her powers, she is a bright girl and enjoys learning, especially science. She is also very good with music and is rarely seen without her flute.

"Thanks for stopping by and I'll be sure to give Dr. Myers your application for the summer," Seneca took the manila folder with Kiran's paperwork and put it into a tall, metal cabinet. She was wearing her white lab coat. "Is there anything else you need?" She was careful to keep her tone formal; Dr. Elsa Myers would not be pleased otherwise.
Kiran shook her head. "No thanks," she smiled and pushed a strand of dark hair out of her face. "I should probably go soon; I told a friend I'd meet him just outside of town later this afternoon."
Seneca nodded. "I'll show you to the door," she replied. She stood up from the desk she was seated at and lead the way through rows of offices. Once they reached the front desk, she whispered a few words to the man who was seated in the chair. He noded. "It was nice meeting with you, Kiran, and we'll contact you within a few weeks."
Kiran was about to ask more questions, but she got the idea that Seneca wasn't in the mood to answer these questions, so she left without asking. She had slipped a business card with contact information into her flute case - even now, she had her flute with her. Besides, she didn't have a lot of time to dawdle; she was supposed to meet with Chris.
As she made her way across town, she noticed that there were a number of people she'd never seen before. She had been under the impression that Kosaka Island was relatively uninhabited, but maybe she'd been wrong. It wouldn't be the first time.
She made her way towards a small, foresty area not far away from town. This was the place she said she'd meet Chris and according to her watch - which was probably a few minutes off what it should have been - she had a few more minutes to wait. So, she decided to open up her flute case and practice a little bit while she waited for him to arrive.
