Name: Felix Felicis
Alias: Phil
Age: 17
Birthday: June 16th
Race: Meta-Feline
Home Town: Great Britain
Grade: 12
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Straight. Likes Females, both human and feline (or anything in-between).
Appearance:
A sleek, black, shorthaired domestic cat whose front left and rear right paws are white at the ends. His only striking feature is the bright electric-green eyes. He will, on occasion, wear a smart collar, but mostly doesn’t bother.
It’s pointless describing his human form at this time, as he hasn’t managed to transform to it yet. That’s a big reason why he’s come to Kosaka.
Image:
Personality:
Phil is a loving, caring person/cat who likes to be petted/stroked and cradled in someone’s arms, especially if they’re female. He generally likes to be treated as the cat he is. He is very trustworthy and keeps peoples secrets.
Phil may be found awake or asleep at any time of the day or night, as a cat is a primarily nocturnal creature, after all. He usually pays attention in classes and stays awake while in them. (Unless knocked unconscious, of course.)
He is a curious creature, and will often wander where he’s not supposed to, but if someone insists he leave he will do so, until he feels like returning once more.
Phil doesn’t like to get his fur wet, but he’s not afraid of water and if he’s already soaked (by rain or whatever) he’ll happily jump into deeper water and go for a swim. It takes ages for him to lick himself dry, but much less time if someone helps dry him by some other means.
Like all cats, Phil will chase small things that move fast, and he really enjoys this activity.
He really enjoys sunbathing, though he obviously can’t get a tan. People wonder how he can stand getting so hot, being that he has black fur and all, but cats are notorious lovers of extreme heat. There are even stories of blacksmith’s cats perching over their furnaces etc. Look it up!
Phil’s general behaviour is very much influenced by his cat instincts.
Greatest Fear:
Cowardice in the face of imminent death, causing him to break a promise. Such as a promise to protect someone, where their enemy has an obvious power-advantage etc.
Most Important Secret:
He’ll go nuts around Catnip, whatever form he’s in. – It’s like his Kryptonite.
History (Character Background):
Phil’s father (Alan) was a Neko, his mother (Loren) is a Meta-Feline just like him. He was born as a kitten and was initially treated like a beloved pet, until he learned language and started to thought-speak.
After his father’s disappearance, he and his mother chose to become pets to a reasonably wealthy family rather than struggle alone. Needless to say, that family were quite surprised the day Phil started thought-speaking to them. In fact, that’s quite an understatement: They totally freaked!
Phil had good reason for breaking his silence; to save the lives of the two human children he’d grown quite fond of. Once their parents (Amanda and Richard) had calmed down and accepted the information he provided them, the children were soon rescued from their kidnapper, who was promptly locked up.
After this incident, Loren explained who and what she and Phil were, and offered to leave the family if that’s what they wanted.
Thankfully, they invited them to stay on as long as they promised to keep looking after the children as they had done with the kidnapping.
As with most cats, Phil’s sleeping-place-of-choice was either on or in the beds of the family’s children, curled up against them for warmth.
As everyone got older, Phil started to prefer the girl’s (Sophie’s) bed over the boy’s (Craig’s) bed, because the boy had a tendency to fidget and disturb Phil’s slumber. But whenever Sophie had a sleepover at one of her friends’ houses, Phil preferred the fidgeting boy to an empty bed.
Despite finding out that one day Phil might be able to manifest in a human body, the human family still let him sleep wherever he liked: They trusted him like a member of their own family combined with a pet, same with his mother. Loren tended to sleep at the end of Craig’s bed, to keep him company in Phil’s absence, but she’d always be on top of the duvet, never in it.
Craig and Sophie were home-taught by a private tutor outside of school hours, and Phil learned everything academic from this tutor with his ‘sister and brother’, as he though of them.
All family members confided secrets with Phil and Loren, like people always confide in their pets. Phil never broke confidentiality, neither did his mum.
Loren remains with the family in Phil’s absence, to keep them company while he’s at Kosaka.
Powers:
1. Phil can (or will eventually be able to) transform to human. He’ll have no control over what his human form will look like, but he’ll only have one human form, unique to him. There’s no fixed time-limit for staying in human form, but if he goes to sleep (or loses consciousness) he’ll be a cat again when he wakes up.
2. *Phil can morph to other breeds of cat. He’s not very good at this yet, and can so-far only manage breeds around his own natural size. The larger the target breed, the harder the transformation and the less control he’ll have over its instincts. If he attempts and fails a transformation for some reason, he’ll lose consciousness and gradually return to his normal form (over about 30 seconds). When this happens, he won’t awaken until either someone wakes him, or a good 2 hours have passed. What he’ll eventually discover, is that the bigger the target breed, the less time he can spend in that form without losing consciousness or returning to his usual self. Over time and practise, form-durations may gradually increase, but they will still be proportional to the target mass. The more resistance he gives to a form’s natural instincts, the less time he can spend in that form. Any injuries he sustains are carried from one form to another without any healing (unless someone else heals him). Such injuries will remain proportional to the mass of whatever he morphs. If he loses consciousness, he’ll gradually return to his normal form (over about 60 seconds, for a complete morph).
3. Outbound-only telepathic communication (thought-speak). This is necessary for intelligent communication, as cats can’t manage actual speech with their vocal-chords etc. Should this count as a separate power? IMO it’s not really a ‘power’ per-se, in which case I’ll add another to act as 3rd main power labelled ‘4’ below, thus:
4. Ever hear the phrase that luck can rub off on people? This is true for Phil. Although his luck is nothing special, he brings a small amount of luck to those who either stroke him, or who he rubs up against (the way that cats do). The amount in question is so small as to usually go unnoticed, and Phil himself thinks it no more than coincidence, though he’s usually happy to placate when someone is nervous about something etc.
This only works from his original form.
There are many rumours about lucky black cats etc. IRL, and also a few people might recognise Phil’s real name and it’s relation to luck.
Skills:
As with all healthy cats, Phil is extremely flexible and has fast reflexes etc. I’m sure I don’t have to detail everything a cat is good at, as most people already know.
When he eventually manages human form, he’ll find he has a natural affinity/talent with Yo-yos, Diabolos, etc, (anything ‘string-ish’). This will lead him to realize there is a rope-weapon thing that he’d most-likely also be good with. For violence though, there’s usually no substitute for the feline form, but having said that: Until he can manage morphing a sufficiently brutal breed of cat, his human form may be the more suitable choice for protecting someone.

[3rd-Person (With NPC’s)]
A white paw emerged from under the hem of Sophie’s duvet, closely followed by a furry black head with startling green eyes. Felix Felicis emerged from his warm and cosy sleeping place, trying not to wake his ‘sister’/owner as his coat brushed against her still-sleeping body.
She stirred and turned her head toward him, cracking one eye open to see his apologetic-looking face turn to meet her gaze.
“’Mornin’ Phil,” She mumbled with a smile. Felix seemed to sigh before responding.
<Good morning Li’l-Sis’, sorry I woke you.> he finally replied, directly into her mind, and he stretched out his muscles on the pillow next to her.
“That’s ok,” She said with a yawn, reaching over herself, with the arm furthest away, to stroke his head and scratch behind his ear, “You know I don’t mind being woken in such a gentle way.”
Phil’s eyes closed as he nuzzled against her hand while she scratched behind his ear: He loved it when people did that to him. Her arm returned to its previous location, and Sophie closed her eyes again: She’d soon be back to sleep.
Sometimes Felix would manage to not wake her when he got up, but today wasn’t one of those rare days.
He hopped off the bed with a tiny THUMP as he hit carpet, then he slinked out of the room to do his rounds. Felix always checked every room in the house when he got up after the night’s sleep, but today he paid extra attention to every detail: By tomorrow, with luck, he’d be on Kosaka Island!
A mix of strong emotion was going on in Phil’s head: He was excited about his up-coming journey to and in Kosaka Academy, but he was also very sad to be away from his family for such a long time, both his real mother Loren, in Craig’s bedroom next door, and his adoptive/host family whom he’d grown fond of over the many years he’d lived with them in this very house. It was much more than a house to him, of course – This was his home.
An hour or so later, Phil finished his rounds for the interior of the house and returned to the dining-room/kitchenette for breakfast. It usually took Felix a fraction of that time to sweep through all the rooms of the house, but as already mentioned: Today was special.
He wandered around the room for a bit before finally catching a glimpse of the clock – 7:23am. Right. The family won’t be up yet, not for a little while… Realizing this, he promptly hopped into one of the easy-chairs and curled up.
What seemed like mere moments later, a delicate hand landed softly on his shoulder and began to stroke him. If he could’ve smiled, he would have; Sophie was returning the favour from earlier, he’d know her touch anywhere. He opened his eyes to confirm his suspicions and sure enough, there she was; smiling away like she always did when she got to wake him up for a change. She merely winked at him as he stirred and rolled over so she could stroke his other side. That’s when he noticed Craig grinning at him from the dining-table. Strange… Craig’s not usually awake until… Phil’s head snapped around, trying to locate the clock. Instead he saw Loren’s face as she padded toward him.
<Don’t worry, it’s not that late yet, honey. Craig’s just up early to see you off, that’s all.> His mum comforted him. Felix was relieved.
After breakfast, Loren and her son went out through the cat-flap to check their territory for intruders or any other changes. This took the best part of 2 hours though, as before, it usually only took a fraction of that time. They timed their task to return at about midday, hopping back in through the cat-flap in time to see their host family getting everything ready for the journey ahead.
Soon everyone was bundled into the family car, and they headed North-East to Heathrow airport. Unlike a lot of cats, Phil liked going on car journeys. But then, most cats would be confined to some sort of cage on such a journey, where this was unnecessary for Felix or his mum. He spent a happy few hours, going from lap to lap and being petted by the host-family he was going to miss so much over the coming months without them. Loren, meanwhile, stayed put on the middle-seat between the children in the back of the second-hand-but-immaculate Jaguar car the family owned. The fact that Jaguar was also a breed of cat, had contributed slightly to the family’s choice to purchase it rather than an old Mercedes.
Eventually they reached the airport and parked up. Richard and Amanda retrieved a large 2-handled wire-frame cage from the boot of the car. It was designed to carry 2 cats in relative comfort, and be carried between two people. Phil looked from the cage to his mother, and Loren explained that Airports don’t like animals ‘running wild’ in their terminals, so they’d have to travel in the cage to go indoors.
They padded side-by-side to the waiting terminal building, followed closely by their host-family, and entered the cage without fuss when they reached the entrance. Some strangers gave them funny looks, evidently thinking it weird to see cats voluntarily cage themselves, but they remained otherwise un-hassled. The family took turns carrying their cage through the terminal until they reached the right check-in gate for the plane to Kosaka Island. The check-in staff had special instructions for ‘certain’ Kosaka passengers, such as Felix and a few others in various disguises to keep normal humans from guessing they were meta-humans, and once in the secluded departure-lounge where passengers on other planes couldn’t see them, Phil and Loren were surprised how many disguises disappeared into hand-luggage, or in some cases the nearest bin, and the variety of the meta-people they then saw. They were out of that cage like bullets, rushing over to surprised meta-humans and introducing themselves left and right, seeing others do the same.
Minutes later, Loren had to return to the cage to go home with their host-family, who were at least glad Phil seemed to be getting along with his new companions he’d be sharing a plane with. After spending proper time saying farewell, Phil watched the family as they walked away and out of sight. If cats could cry, Felix was certain there’d be a tear in his eye.
Notes:
This character is inspired by my original (un-named) character, but is a lot less GM’y. The ‘general rule’ with shape-shifters has been abided by, and the ‘morph-selection’ is a lot more limited than my original character, and more in-line with one of the suggested improvements for him. The number of available forms starts very low, with the intent that this number will increase GRADUALLY over time (depending how ‘big’ Phil can manage to get at any given time).
If he’s still too ‘Uber’ (as some called my original), I’ve no problem altering Power #2 to whatever extent is necessary. – This is, after all, his most formidable power. Hopefully the other ‘powers’ are acceptable as-is, for they are quite ‘weak’.
